Investigation of Natural Ventilation Techniques in Historical Buildings, a Case Study in Palermo

The natural ventilation of buildings provides improvement of internal comfort and air quality conditions leading to a significant reduction of the consumption of cooling energy.

In the present paper the air flow patterns, velocity and air temperature distributions inside a historical building in Palermo (Italy), at present used as a library, were investigated by a 3D transient simulation using COMSOL Multiphysics.

This study shows the effectiveness of a simple cooling technique and its operating conditions during the hottest days of the summer 2006 in Palermo. The simulation results are in agreement the values measured during an experimental study.
