Planar Transformer on a PCB

A planar transformer is a transformer that is integrated onto a printed circuit board (PCB). They can either be manufactured as standalone devices, or integrated into the PCB of a module. The planar structure improves the cooling characteristics and gives the device a low profile. Therefore, the main use of planar transformers is in power supplies and DC/DC converters, where a slim high-power design is crucial.

In this model, a static analysis of the inductance and capacitance parameter values is performed. The entire layout, including the footprint of the transformer ferrite core, is imported from an ODB++(X) file. It is imported using the ECAD Import feature, which reads the layout and automatically creates the 3D geometry of the PCB and the ferrite core.
